Week 8 - Beaked Hazelnut (Corylus cornuta) FD14

Beaked Hazelnut or Corylus cornuta from the Betulaceae family is a small tree native to Western North America stretching even into Colorado. The tree has simple alternate leaves and males have a small catkin with females have small flowers in bracts. The Beaked Hazelnut has an edible hazelnut that was an important food to early Pacific Northwestern tribes. Some ecological adaptations are the vegetative reproduction through suckers and the ability to resprout through seeds after a fire.
