Prunus emarginata from the Rosaceae
family is a small tree with white pink flowers and alternate oblong leaves. The
bark is gray with horizontal bands and has bright red cherries. The tree is
native to the west coast, British Columbia to Southern California and as east
as Wyoming and prefers moist conifer and oak forests understories. An
ecological adaptations is the cyanide in the bark that protects against herbivory
and microbial infection.
