The Japanese Maple, Acer palmantum, is a small deciduous tree from the Sapindaceae family. The tree has red or purple flowers and has deep cutting doubly serrated leaves. The tree is native to Japan and Korea in shady woodlands. Some ecological features about this tree are being shade tolerant and having low mesophyll porosity and high trichrome density which protects against herbivore and microbial pathogen defense.
